Filipino community leaders from across the province of Alberta, Canada gathered together for a formal swearing-in of their leaders.
The event was organized by Diaryo Alberta Society (DAS), one of the longest-running Filipino organizations based in Calgary. The event was held in Barrio Fiesta restaurant, Calgary’s well-known Filipino restaurant.
The event included singing performances by Calgary’s amazing singers Niña Mabugat and Allysha Nolasco. Their songs moved the audience given their amazing voice and the fact that both performers have medical emergencies in their respective families. “It didn’t stop them from coming to this special event,” said Marietta Pangan, Diaryo Alberta’s main organizer and Calgary’s Filipino community leader.
The special guest and keynote speaker was Filipino-Canadian Rechie Aileen Valdez who is an elected member of the Parliament for Mississauga – Streetsville in the province of Ontario. MP Valdez was warmly greeted by the group and was given a “White Hat” ceremony by the DAS chair Mr. Romeo Honario. The White Hat ceremony is given to honorable guests and dignitaries who visit the city. “It’s Calgary’s tradition to show our hospitality and respect,” said Mr. Honorio.
After the the leaders were sworn in, GLOBE CEO Dr. Ernie Alama asked the first question to the visiting MP about what can be done for international students who have the qualifications to come to Canada but whose immigration papers are declined. MP Valdez asked to be given more information on these cases so she can discuss it in the Parliament.
GLOBE COO Mr. Abel Pagaling was next to ask the question on funding for community leaders who spend tremendous amounts of time and personal resources to serve the community. “They are not paid in doing this, yet they do it,” said Mr. Pagaling. “Is there some sort of compensation for them to help them financially as they continue to serve our community?”
“The government has grants available,” replied MP Valdez, and suggested to look at what’s available and apply for these grants.
Overall it was a successful event for Alberta’s Filipino Community leaders who look forward to strengthening their collaboration now that the pandemic restrictions are over.
