University Diploma - Social Work
MacEwan University has graduated compassionate, professional social workers for over 40 years. Social workers are able to assess and respond to human problems at both an individual and a social, structural level. Successful applicants are open-minded, empathetic, tolerant and committed to building strong communities.
The Social Work program attracts a diverse range of students from many different cultures and backgrounds. Students will benefit from that diversity as well as small classes, relevant practicum and dedicated faculty. MacEwan University’s commitment to student-centered learning and the flexibility to complete several courses in a blended online format prepare students to find employment in a wide range of settings and/or to continue on with university studies. The program faculty are actively involved in the social work profession, scholarly activity and research.
Social Work is an extremely demanding occupation dealing with such challenging issues as sexual abuse and family violence. Successful applicants have a full understanding of what social workers do and the kind of settings they are employed in. It is also highly desirable that they have some life experience and a great deal of self-awareness before coming into the program. Students who take some time to gain practical experience and enhanced insights prior to entering the program are likely to be the most successful.
University Diploma - Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a health practice and component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complete health care system approach to treating and preventing disease. Practiced for thousands of years, acupuncture has gained more attention as an alternative and complementary treatment choice in western culture, creating excellent career opportunities. In addition to acupuncture, TCM also includes Chinese herbology, diet therapy, tuina, and specific exercises such as tai chi and qigong.
Provincial Registration
MacEwan University’s Acupuncture program prepares students to become a Registered Acupuncturist in Alberta, subject to successful completion of the provincial registration examination administered by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAAA). This curriculum is based on the latest national and international standards of competency, ensuring that their skills and knowledge are global.
Acupuncture in Practice
Acupuncturists work with the body’s energy that flows along well-defined pathways called meridians. Disease and health disorders are viewed as an imbalance of energy. Acupuncturists aim to prevent or treat illness by inserting very thin needles at specific points along the body’s various meridians, normalizing the energy flow.
Modern scientific study has confirmed that Acupuncture induces biochemical changes in the body that have beneficial effects and can facilitate healing.
