Is It Still Worth It?
In recent years, Canada has emerged as a leading destination for international students seeking a world-class education and a truly enriching experience. With its high-quality education system, welcoming culture, and promising post-graduation opportunities, Canada has become a top choice for students from around the globe.
However, at the start of this year, the Canadian government carried out major changes to the international student program. The first major change is the proof-of-funds requirement. It was then followed by additional requirements, along with a cap on the overall number of student permits that would be issued.
The question now is, is it still worth it to come to Canada?
My short answer is Yes, more so now than before.
Here’s my opinion on the changes. It’s designed to strengthen the program.
The cap will ensure deserving clients can come in while keeping the not-so-good candidates out.
The two-year cap will open more work opportunities for those who pursue the program. This will also open more housing options. PLUS, provinces will now need to play a role in choosing the candidates to approve for the program by issuing an attention letter. Keep in mind that even with a cap, Canada will still allow 360,000 students in the country!
Short, Master’s or Doctoral programs allow students to apply for up to 3 years of post-graduate work permit, and spousal open work permit for those who would like to bring their spouses.
With fewer applications overall, I would anticipate a higher chance of visa approval. Having said this, no one can guarantee a visa other than Canadian immigration. At GBE, our preferred immigration consultant takes care of the immigration process for our clients. We recommend that international students work with a licensed Canadian immigration consultant on their visa application.
In my opinion, the time to pursue the international student program is now. As more people choose to Canada, the policies could continue to change. It’s best to go for it now than wait at a later year which could see Canada enact more changes in the program, potentially adding more complexity to the journey.
I congratulate our clients who pursued this program in the previous years and are now here. They avoided these major changes. But no opportunities are missed. It is always taken by those ready for it.
