In 1916, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology doors opened in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with 11 students and a mandate to train veterans returning from the First World War. Over the years, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology matched community needs — as a hospital during the Spanish Flu pandemic and as a Royal Canadian Air Force Wireless Training School during the Second World War. Fast forward to today and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s action-based learning, solution-focused research and industry partnerships are helping to shape the next generation of inventors, entrepreneurs and pioneers. College Diploma - Machining Technology
Start a career as a machinist – a rewarding and challenging trade with precision and craftsmanship as core attributes. Get hands-on machining training by setting up and operating precision and CNC equipment to produce components used in various industries.
As a machinist, students will make or modify mainly metal components to very fine tolerances based on intended designs. Modern machine tools are computer-driven, making machinists responsible for programming and operating high-tech equipment such as CNC mills, lathes, electrical discharge machines (EDM) and coordinate measuring machines (CMM). Metal cutting and shaping operations also use various other tools, including conventional mills, drills, lathes and grinders.
Graduates may pursue job opportunities as a:

Graduates of the Machining Technology program benefit from a high level of industry demand, having achieved recognized training equivalent to the four periods of the Machinist apprenticeship program.

Note: This program meets the eligibility criteria for the Post-Graduation Work Permit program for international students as long as the student is enrolled in the on-campus delivery mode or completes more than 50% of the courses on campus (for the blended option).International students attending all classes online will NOT be eligible for a Post-Graduate Work Permit. International students are responsible for maintaining their eligibility throughout their studies.
College Diploma - Mechanical Engineering Technology
The Mechanical Engineering Technology program is a practical, hands-on, full-time, two-year diploma program that lets students develop strong technical, analytical, and problem solving skills essential for a range of exciting careers in the challenging field of mechanical engineering.
During the common first year, students will be exposed to a variety of topics including foundational math and physics, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and additional specialized courses to prepare them to enter into one of three specialized majors. Upon successful completion of the common first year, selection of students’ major will occur.
Although the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology will attempt to help students complete the program major of their choice, grade point for specific courses will be used in the selection criteria for each major, in case of a seat shortage for specific majors.
The following majors are available for the Mechanical Engineering Technology program:

- • Design and Development
- • Design and Automation
This program requires valid language test results
Applicants interested in applying for direct admission, but are yet to complete an acceptable language test, can do so, but must provide valid results before receiving a final offer letter.
This program offers conditional admissions
For conditional admission, instead of submitting language proficiency test scores, applicants may complete English courses prior to the academic program. The length of the English course is determined based on the applicant’s level of English proficiency.
