Living in residence allows new students to get involved, make new friends, and participate in campus culture and activities. UPEI provides three on-campus residence options–Bernardine Hall, Bill and Denise Andrew Hall and Blanchard Hall–which house up to 440 students. Each residence offers shared or private bedrooms, lounge areas, laundry facilities, wireless internet service and more. UPEI guarantees all first-year undergraduate students a place in residence if they are coming directly from high school, enrolling in a September start date, and if they confirm their offer of residence by the deadline date. Students can use eRezLife to apply for their residence application.
Off-campus Housing
The cost of living in Charlottetown is quite affordable with many apartment rentals available in close proximity to UPEI campus. Students can visit UPEI’s Off-campus Housing Office for more information on rental listings and options.
Homestay
UPEI’s Homestay program–managed by the institution’s English Language Centre–is for students who prefer a “family-like” living arrangement. Homestay is a safe and secure choice, providing students with the opportunity to practice English outside the classroom and learn about Canadian culture.
Homestay provides:
- A clean private heated room in which to relax and study.
- Three meals a day, and access to all home facilities, such as kitchen and laundry.
- Transportation to and from UPEI once a day (unless within walking distance or on the bus line).
About
Located in Charlottetown, the birthplace of Confederation and the capital city of Prince Edward Island, the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) has a rich history with roots in two founding institutions, Prince of Wales College (est. 1834) and Saint Dunstan’s University (est. 1855). Why the University of Prince Edward Island
Island Life: Calm and safe; fun and inviting; hospitable, vibrant, and historic. Beaches, world-class cuisine, and major concerts just minutes away from pastoral farms and the Confederation trail. Downtown Charlottetown is only a 20-minute walk away from campus and has the best of a small city packed with the best of urban life. And, the ocean is never more than a 15-minute drive from the ocean.
Academics: UPEI offers undergraduate programs in Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Nursing, Science, and Veterinary Medicine, and a growing number of graduate programs supported by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Whatever a student’s passion and whatever their goals, UPEI has what they need to carve their niche.
Experiential Education: The UPEI Co-op Program is an integrated approach to university education which enables students to alternate academic terms on campus with work terms in suitable employment. The success of such programs is founded on the principle that students are able to apply theoretical knowledge from course studies in the workplace and return to the classroom with practical workplace experience.

Pathway to Permanent Residency
Provinces in Atlantic Canada are keen to expand their population size. Provincial and federal governments have worked together to provide enhanced immigration programs to help achieve this goal.
Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP)
The Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program is for individuals who:
- Have the skills, education, and work experience to contribute to the economy of a specific province or territory.
- Want to live in that province, and want to become permanent residents of Canada.
If a student graduates from a publicly-funded PEI post-secondary institution, they can apply for a nomination for permanent residency through the International Graduate stream of the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP). The International Graduate stream is employer-driven, allowing Island employers to fill positions that they are unable to fill through the local job market.
Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP)
The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) allows employers to find qualified candidates who they cannot find locally.
The 3 Streams in the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program are:
- Atlantic High-Skilled Program
- Atlantic Intermediate-Skilled Program
- Atlantic International Graduate Program
Each of these programs require specific work experience, education, and language requirements, as well as a job offer. Graduates interested in the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program must receive a job offer from an employer designated by its respective provincial government to take part in the pilot.
If students have studied in an Atlantic province, they may qualify for the Atlantic International Graduate Program if:
- They lived in an Atlantic province for at least 16 months.
- They should have graduated within the last 24 months before you apply.
- They have a valid immigration status in Canada.
